Drumroll for the Dolphin Inn
We’re absolutely delighted here at Bayview Oxwich that one of our favourite Gower pubs has opened its doors again. The Dolphin Inn in Llanrhidian had been in the same family for decades and sadly had to close its doors, but since May 2024 it’s been under new management and we couldn’t be more pleased!
At the heart of the estuary village of Llanrhidian, the Dolphin Inn is an historic and cosy pub dating from the Eighteenth Century. It is close to the village green with its ancient megaliths and has a style from its extensive beer garden directly into the churchyard of the Thirteenth Century Church dedicated to not one, but two saints – St Rhidian and St Illtyd.
We agree with comments on Trip Adviser that say that the Dolphin might be ‘the best and most welcoming pub in Gower’. Small and unpretentious it is ‘real’ with its unfussy bar and glowing stove in the fireplace. Importantly, it serves Real Ales flagged up by www.camra.org.uk as having Timothy Taylor Landlord and Wye Valley Butty Bach available which are making it the go-to pit stop for beer enthusiasts, cyclists and walkers alike.
The new owners are determined to put the Dolphin Inn back at the centre of village life and welcome locals and visitors alike to their live music evenings, the new quiz night that is starting up, and to partake in the bar games on offer. This isn’t a foodie pub, but an authentic pub that offers chats, good beers and toasties, sandwiches and small platters.
In addition, the pub is dog-friendly, has plenty of parking and a children’s play area. It also has lovely photographs of local landmarks, including at least three taken by my (Ellen Reilly) grandfather, Ted, who at 97 is Llanrhidian’s oldest resident and along with other members of the bowls club, is now frequenting the Dolphin Inn again on a regular basis.
The Dolphin Inn is just a 15-min drive from Bayview Oxwich and is an ideal destination to tie in with a walk along the narrow marsh road that skirts the Loughor Estuary or through the woods that lead to Weobley Castle. You won’t be disappointed.
