The Shed Restaurant at SA1 – just keeps making headlines!
2024 has been some year for Swansea’s wonderful restaurant The Shed at SA1. And with all the accolades it keeps getting from its diners and top UK food critics, it seems 2025 is set to bring more of the same!
At Bayview Oxwich, it’s hard to think that it was only in early February that The Shed opened its doors to diners eager to taste the creations and enjoy the ambience cooked up by Jonathan Woolway, who after 16 years as Head Chef at London’s highly regarded restaurant, St John, returned home to realise his ambitions of opening his own restaurant in his beloved Swansea – his city by the sea.
And the rest as they say his history: By March 2024 The Shed was the name on everyone’s lips, and featured in a glowing article in The Guardian the Shed in Swansea written by acclaimed food critic Grace Dent. Grace Dent is a British columnist, broadcaster and author. She is a restaurant critic for The Guardian and from 2011 to 2017 wrote a restaurant column for the Evening Standard. She is a regular critic on the BBC's MasterChef and has appeared on Channel 4's television series Very British Problems. She is the author of ‘Comfort Eating’ published by Guardian Faber.
And it seems her impressions of the Shed stayed with her as at the end of December 2024, she included Swansea’s The Shed as one of her Restaurants of the Year for 2024, stating that she was ‘smitten’ with its offerings and flagging up the point that it was a “fine example of how, these days, it’s often ‘not London’ where indies can let their imaginations fly.”
With Gower on the doorstep, offering a bounty of the finest seasonal produce from land, sea and pasture, Jonathan is able to let his imagination fly and create the most fantastic meat, fish and vegetable dishes. Combine this with the vibe of a beautifully renovated space in a former Victorian warehouse in the dockland hub of Swansea, and a friendly and professional team committed to service and sustainability and it’s no wonder it’s a winner!
It wasn’t just The Guardian that had something to say – not one, but twice – but also The Telegraph, where food critic, William Sitwell, kept the accolades coming when he referred to The Shed as follows:
“The Shed bursts with pride, warmth and a very decent wine list…It is full in heart and generous in spirit, industrially chic, within refurbished warehouses…a riverside gem in the heart of South Wales.”
