Gower Peninsula – the perfect location

After living in SW London for too many years, we never take from granted the views that greet us every morning from the bedroom windows here at Bayview, Oxwich now we’ve come home: the golden sweep of the bay, the limestone of iconic Three Cliffs Bay in the distance, the sea ever-present. No wonder the Gower peninsula was designated the UK’s first ever Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB 1956) and no wonder it has provided the backdrop for so many films, television series and advertising campaigns.

Earlier this year we were excited to see the filming of the second series of the acclaimed BBC drama, ‘Keeping Faith’ (Un Bore Mercher/One Wednesday Morning, in Welsh) starring Eve Myles as the fabulous Faith Howells. She did a lot of tweeting about Oxwich’s ability to ‘seduce’ her. The English version of series 2 aired in Summer 2019 to much praise. To see Oxwich and other glorious south-west Wales locations, on screen, you can binge on the ‘Keeping Faith’ box set available through Amazon.

But that’s not all. The Gower peninsula packs a big punch for such a compact area, so a short drive from Oxwich on the south side, will take you to the wilder, north-west, and the expansive sands of Rhossili Bay, which has been voted the UK’s No. 1 beach and figured among the world’s top ten. You might have seen it as the setting for the youth choir singing ‘Bread of Heaven’ which began the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics? Or perhaps seen it in Lloyd’s TSB advert with its famous black horse? Did you know that it was ‘New Earth’ in BBC Television’s Dr Who and was showcased in Torchwood’s episode ‘Miracle Day’?
