Autumn Foraging Adventure in Gower

Towards the end of the school summer holidays, our youngest daughter, Alice, informed us she had a project to do for school on foraging. Living in Gower, surrounded on three sides by sea, and blessed with beaches, marshes, rock pools, dunes and common land, not forgetting the unique Wales Coast Path, the peninsula provides a rich bounty of edible delights right on our doorstep at Bayview, Oxwich.

We enjoyed a great day out, just observing and noting what we saw, as we tramped the beaches of north Gower and made our way to the tidal island of Burry Holms at Llangennith. We could name the obvious: the blackberries, the mussels, and the seaweed. But we are no experts and didn’t know what might be safe to eat or even allowed to be picked.

And now we’ve discovered www.yourpeakadventures.co.uk a company that runs foraging adventures in south Wales. We thought you’d like to know about them as they have a great day out coming up on Sunday, 3rd November offering a Gower Coastal Foraging Experience, exploring the Gower Coast Path and beaches for edible plants and other things of interest.

It’s a great time of year to experience Gower in all its autumn glory and it’s a great time of year to make your base here at Bayview, Oxwich in one of our luxury holiday rental properties.

The Peak Adventures Foraging Experience is run by an expert in the field of foraging who will impart the knowledge needed to benefit for the activity safely and legally. The day will include learning about Gower’s samphire – a salty bitter plant that graces many fine-dining establishments such as Oxwich’s Michelin Star Beach House Restaurant. It also gives the famed Gower Salt-Marsh lamb its distinctive flavour. The day will focus on seaweed, kelp, winkles, sea kale, sea holly, mushrooms, greens and berries found on the beaches and on the coastal paths.

It is set to be a real learning experience for novices such as us, covering:

  • Plant identification

  • Seasonal foraging

  • Recipes and how to cook foraged food

  • How to prepare foraged food

  • Medicinal uses

  • Legal aspects

It is a 5-hour adventure, over about 10kms. It will take place whatever the weather so appropriate waterproof gear and footwear is essential. As my grandmother used to say: there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing!

After an energetic and stimulating day out, there’s no better place to return to and chill out than one of our luxury contemporary cottages, exquisite flats, or even our exclusive retreat. For information about which of our properties would suit you and your friends and family best, please ring Wanda and the Team at Bayview, Oxwich.

We hope to see you
