Macmillan Mighty Hikes 2023 – the Gower peninsula

It’s not too soon to start thinking about lacing up your walking boots and getting ready for the 2023 programme of Mighty Hikes organised by Macmillan Cancer UK. At Bayview, Oxwich we’re planning to make it a New Year’s resolution to get fit ready for July 8th when this wonderful fundraising hiking event takes place in our very own Gower peninsula.

With our luxury holiday rentals filling fast for next summer, we’re flagging this event up good and early in case you want to take an active part in the marathon or half-marathon options the event offers or merely spectate and be part of the buzz. Whatever option you choose, you can be guaranteed a haven for some quality down time and r&r in one of our three architect-designed contemporary cottages or one of our two stunning apartments.

We’re not surprised Macmillan has chosen Gower for this fund-raising hike yet again. It was after all the UK’s first ever designated area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and all those who sign up for this 41.9k marathon (or the half-marathon 20.1k) will be able to do their bit for Cancer Research at the same time as taking in some of the most outstanding coastal and countryside landscapes in the whole of the UK.

The hike kicks off close to Oxwich at Penrice Castle, heading for Penmaen and the beautiful and renowned Three Cliffs Bay, looping back to Oxwich and on to Gower’s southern sandy bays of Horton and Port Eynon. The hike then follows the rugged limestone cliff path to Mewslade and onto iconic Rhossili Bay and Worm’s Head. From there, walkers cross the wide expanse of sand to Llangennith, and then to Gower’s northern villages of Llanmadoc and Landimore before returning to Oxwich across Gower’s heartland of Fairyhill and Reynoldston.

Much of the route follows the Gower Coast Path (part of Wales’ unique Coast Path) and along the way you can see castles, churches, caves, tidal islands and a fabulous selection of flora and fauna.

So be part of a UK walking effort for Macmillan Cancer. To learn more about the Gower route and the benefits of signing up (such as the free food at the pit-stops along the way and the bubbly and medal at the end), please visit https://mightyhikes.macmillan.org.uk/choose-a-hike/gower-peninsula
