Local Gower beach in Global Big 7 Travel’s world top 50 list

Yet again, Rhossili Bay situated on the western edge of the Gower peninsula and just a 15-min drive from Bayview Oxwich has been included in one of the world’s most prestigious listings of best beaches.

We tend to take for granted what’s on our doorstep and it’s worth reminding ourselves that over the years Rhossili Bay has been given accolades for: the best picnic spot in the UK; the best surf spot in the UK; the best sunset in the UK; the UK’s number one dog-friendly beach. The list goes on and it’s no wonder that the Independent has referred to Rhossili Bay as “the supermodel of British beaches.”

But the latest accolade by Global Travel site Big 7 travel really puts it up there with big hitters from across the world and placing it in the top 50 beaches globally. The criteria were stringent and the rankings were made after looking at the aggregate of scores including previous media results, official Blue Flag location, social media popularity and expert contributions from the Big 7 editorial team.

Although Ellen here at Bayview loves the more gentle south side of the Gower peninsula, it was overlooking Rhossili Bay in the village of Llangennith that she was born and brought up. In fact, her family still lives in a house facing this breath-taking Atlantic-facing beach. She is often asked which she prefers. The answer is easy in that Oxwich and Rhossili Bays are beautiful in their own distinctive ways and what’s great is that Gower is so compact that Bayview’s visitors can hop from one beach to another and get a feel of both.

Rhossili Bay is described by Big 7 Travel as ‘Three miles of golden sands that await you in the Gower Peninsula of Wales. It’s a bit of a hike down a steep cliff-top path to get there, but all good things require a bit of effort. It’s a popular surfing spot, or you can just relax and enjoy the beach – it’s kept pristine under the watchful eye of the National Trust.’

As a local girl, Ellen would like you to know that you don’t have to do the steep hike to get access to the bay. If you drive to Hillend, Llangennith and park up, you can take a leisurely walk (approx. 1.5 miles) across the flat expanse of sandy beach from there to Rhossili.
