Tŷ Sawna Oxwich makes a splash on the BBC

Bayview was thrilled to see Tŷ Sawna, Oxwich recently showcased on the BBC. If you didn’t catch it first time around, take a look at the story of how Welsh-born, nature-lover and global-traveller, Harri Barker, ended up bringing a Scandi-style sauna to our local bay here in Oxwich, on the Gower peninsula.

In fact, since setting up her first wood-fired barrel sauna in 2022 she has brought another one to the bay. Such is the demand for what’s on offer right on the doorstep here at Bayview. We are doubly blessed.

Of course the location is a great appeal. It is wonderful to find a sauna located in a coastal setting, rather than in the corner of a sweat gym! At Tŷ Sawna, you can move from the cold of the sea to the cwtch of the sauna in a few footsteps. That’s why it’s loved so much by those who are new to saunas, the growing ranks of sauna-lovers in the UK, and by wild and cold-water swimmers at any time of the year. After you’ve immersed yourself in the ocean (and in the moment of the chill!) you can enjoy the warmth of a communal space.

Research is pointing to this cyclical approach from hot to cold being beneficial for both physical health and mental well-being. Here you can get away from the stresses of the phone and the rush of everyday life. As Harri says, “it brings you back to earth a little bit.”  It’s a contemplative space to connect not only with nature, but with a community of people from all walks of life. Ultimately, it’s a space to connect with yourself and lower your blood pressure at the same time. Some people have likened it to the community function of the disappearing pub – but this is better for your head the next morning and your waistline!

Harri sums it up like this: “Picture sitting in a warm, steamy sauna barrel, looking out through the of the half-moon panoramic window at the grey, stormy skies and the wild, ocean waves.”

Tŷ Sawna provides just the impetus we need here at Bayview to get outside at any time of the year and not let the weather stop us. And it’s yet another local Gower enterprise that we’re proud to recommend to our guests who stay in our portfolio holiday rental luxury apartments (Tŷ Seren and Tŷ Gwawr) and contemporary cottages (Tŷ Megan, Tŷ Florence and Tŷ Alice) and proud to be liked through the use of ‘Tŷ’.

Tŷ Sawna can be booked in 55-minute slots. To book and to find out more about Harri’s venture and the wide range of benefits gained from hot to cold therapy, please visit www.tysawna.co.uk
