Worm’s Head Gower – Walk. Eat. Breathe.
Worm’s Head, Gower must surely be one of the most iconic coastal landscapes in the UK. The limestone promontory at Rhossili is a tidal island and as its Viking name embodies, resembles a worm, stretching out into the wild Atlantic Ocean.
Just a 15-min drive from us here at Bayview Oxwich, Worm’s Head is a must-visit for those who literally want to have their breath taken away by spectacular views of the Gower peninsula’s most western edge.
You can park up in the National Trust car park and walk as much or as little as your fitness dictates. There is a section of paved walk from the car park out towards the Worm, and then a wide track which is flat all the way. It takes about 15-mins to reach the end of the mainland where the coastguard station (manned) gives details of tides. The island is accessible only for a short period of times between high and low tide. A dangerous causeway separates the island from the mainland so STRICT RULES APPLY.
Whether you choose the mainland or the island, you’ll be guaranteed a feast of birdlife, sheep, wild ponies, and dramatic cliffs. Stand and wonder at Worm’s Head and look across the sweep of sandy Rhossili Bay to see another tidal island of Burry Holms which book ends the expanse. Simply breath-taking!
If you want to walk further, just pick up the Gower Coast Path section of the unique Wales Coast Path and you’ll arrive in mostly unpeopled bays such as Fall Bay, and Mewslade and the dramatic coves of this wild section of south Gower.
And when you’re done with the walking you can find a variety of informal pit stops all offering food with a view. Our favourites at Bayview Oxwich are:
