Blackpill Lido named in UK’s Top 5

Blackpill Lido, Swansea, has recently been named among the UK’s Top 5 Lidos in research carried out by Fulton Umbrellas. It was the only one in Wales to be singled out, and held its head high along with four others from Brighton, London, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Situated on the edge of the Swansea Bay promenade and close to the village of Mumbles, it’s a great place for a fun-filled family day out. And it’s less than a 30-minute drive from Bayview, Oxwich.

Lidos have a special place in the heart and memory of the UK. Originally coming into being the 1930s when swimming was very much in fashion, they offered open-aired swimming pools and bathing beaches that were open to the public. Ellen here at Bayview remembers many lovely days out at the old lido at Blackpill and her mother remembers it too when there were paddling boats there and steam trains that ran along the nearby line, now long gone.

Today the Blackpill Lido is a very different place and has been extensively refurbished. It offers:

  • a paddling pool with shallow waters

  • a children’s play area

  • a climbing rock

  • extensive picnic facilities

  • a tall fountain where kids can dodge the water

  • clean toilets

  • nearby cafés such at The Junction Café

When the sun’s out, there’s no better place to be for a taste of some quality, old-fashioned charm. And if the lido is not enough it’s just a hop across the promenade to have a dip in the sea on the sweep of Swansea Bay or to cross the road and take in the delights of Swansea’s oasis of calm in the wonderful blooms of Clyne Gardens.

The Lido is open every day from 09.00-17.00 until the end of August 2021 and entry is free.
