Making Waves in Gower
In the heady days of the 60s, in wasn’t just California that was where it was at for all things surfing. Gower and the south Wales area were in at the birth of the UK surf-scene. From those early days, the Gower area has developed a thriving, local surf culture and vibe where men and women of all ages and abilities take advantage of the consistency and quality of the waves and the unique scenic beauty.
Today it’s not just locals who enjoy the sport. Gower is now quite rightly regarded as one of the UK’s top surfing locations and has built an internationally acknowledged reputation in the ever-growing global surfing community.
Due to its compact nature, there is always a great wave to be caught. And Gower’s got the lot: beach breaks, reef breaks and point breaks so if it’s not working somewhere, you only have to drive a short distance to catch your perfect wave elsewhere. Here are a few of the most popular:
Llangennith – suitable for all abilities. Mellow beach break and space for everybody in 3km of beach. Works at all tides. Best swell direction S-W. Best wind E.
Langland – best for the experienced surfer. Works on a regular basis. Offers beach, point and reef breaks. Works at all tides. Best swell direction S-W. Best wind N.
Caswell – great for beginners. Exposed but consistent. Works best mid-to-high tide. Best swell direction SE. Best wind N. Also here you’ll find the world’s first purpose-built fully adaptive surf centre as featured in BBC Children in Need Special 2021based www.surfabilityukcic.org
Oxwich – a great offshore break with lovely shape on occasion here in Oxwich when there is an onshore SW storm blowing in at Llangennith and it is blown out there.

Surfing is at Gower’s heart and soul not only on the beach, but in the many surfing businesses that you will find in the peninsula. Take for example one of Gower’s earliest surfers, legend Peter Jones (PJ), who was at one time in the 1970s both Welsh and European Champion. He’s still living the dream and surfing in Gower and running a famous surfing shop along with his son, James, on the village green in Llangennith where you’ll be able to rent or buy surfboards, boogie boards and wetsuits along with expert guidance and surf reports. www.facebook.com/pjs.s.shop . Gower, as you’d expect, also offers surfing lessons throughout the year including the following: Gower Surf School Progress Surf School Llangennith Surf School
Surfing has come a long way since its inception in Gower back in the 60s, especially in technology of wetsuits, hats, boots and gloves so that Gower’s waves can be enjoyed in winter. This means that Gower’s waves, like our luxury apartments and contemporary cottages, are open all-year-long. Whatever the season, we invite you to come and enjoy the beach and Bayview.
