Outstanding Natural Outdoor Experiences in Gower

Now, more than ever, is the time to experience the great outdoors. Here at Bayview Oxwich, you’re well placed to enjoy the best of what Gower has to offer: safe, socially-distanced spaces that guarantee fantastic views, sandy bays, unique cultural experiences along with fresh air and fun for all the family.

The Reilly family has recently been taking advantage of what’s just a ten-minute drive away by car – the fabulous Vile field system at Rhossili. Here you’ll find an ancient landscape, rich in culture: 45 hectares of farmland stretching out to sea near the iconic tidal island of Worm’s Head. The fields in this area showcase one of the best examples of the traditional Mediaeval open-strip farming systems in the UK.

Run by www.nationaltrust.org/rhossili-and-south-gower-coast/features/theVile-an-ancient-landscape-rich-in-culture you can see farming carried out in a wildlife-friendly way through the creation of new hay meadows, the sowing of traditional crops which create perfect habitats for arable plants, birds and pollinators.

Our children loved it. There was so much for them to look at and listen to and a lot of fun to be had. As well as learning about the social history of farming they could run free in fields of stunning sunflowers, flowering hay meadows, poppies and lupins, at the very edge of the sea.

If you’re fit and energetic you can walk from Bayview, Oxwich to Rhossili along an awe-inspiring 10 mile (and arduous) section of the www.walescoastpath and take in dramatic limestone scenery and ancient caves as you go.

Or, you can drive and park up in the National Trust owned carpark at Rhossili. The carpark is currently being operated in line with Welsh Government COVID-19 guidance. To ensure social distancing, limited spaces are available.

Whatever way you choose to get to Rhossili, once you’re there you can enjoy the Vile long circular walk, a flat and easy 1 mile walk which takes between 20 and 60 minutes depending on how fast you want to go (Explorer 164).

We took our time, enjoying the breath-taking views and this spectacular natural, and uniquely farmed, landscape bursting with colour and wildlife. As you can see, a good time was had by all!
