Swansea – City by the Sea

We’re always amazed at Bayview, Oxwich when we read articles that express surprise at how wonderful Swansea is as a long – or short – break holiday destination. We’re even more surprised when it is endlessly framed with comparisons to the Mediterranean or Italy’s Bay of Naples. Swansea is a unique Welsh city by the sea with a distinctive vibe and we’re proud to celebrate that and point out its delights to our guests here in nearby Gower.

However, we did recently read an extensive and informative feature in The Guardian (04 08 2021) summarising what’s on offer in Swansea. The beautifully written article, by Phoebe Taplin, recounts a car-free experience in Dylan Thomas’ ‘ugly, lovely town’ and how it shook-up her expectations.

You can read the article in full at www.theguardian.com/travel/2021/aug/04/i-could-be-by-the-med-car-free-short-break-swansea-dylan-thomas-gower  but a quick synopsis here to point guests to Swansea’s delights.

  • enjoy the pavement cafés in the pedestrianised area of Wind Street with a backdrop of a ruined Norman castle

  • walk the glorious 5-mile sweep of Swansea bay connecting the city with the Victorian seaside village of Mumbles

  • explore two museums exploring local history: the Victorian neoclassical Swansea Museum with its ‘jumble of treasures’ and within walking distance, the slate and glass halls of the high-tech National Waterfront Museum with its focus on three-centuries of Welsh industrial and maritime history

  • taste the sea in Swansea’s restaurants such as El Pescador or from Swansea’s world-famous indoor market. Try the laverbread or Penclawdd cockles  or Wales’ sea trout known as sewin

  • take the bus to Uplands, a suburb of Swansea and visit Dylan Thomas’ house, the park at Cwmdonkin, or his favourite watering hole at the Uplands Tavern

  • hop on board Swansea’s new open-topper from Swansea to Bracelet Bay and spot seals or hop off at Langland Bay and watch the surf from the Langland Brasserie

  • meander around characterful Mumbles and perhaps walk the Victorian pier or explore the wealth of art and craft galleries
